Caleb Plant Turns Down Fight Against David Benavidez In September

Caleb Plant Refuses Fight Against David Benavidez In September – Jose Benavidez Sr has revealed that Caleb Plant has “rejected” a fight with David Benavidez for the month of September. After blabbering about WBC’s number 1 super-middleweight challenger, Benavidez Plant backed out. Jose Sr said they contacted Team Plant and refused to fight David Benavidez. Caleb Plant took less than a day to turn down a fight with Benavidez after talking about the chaos on social media. Plant rejected the fight with Benavidez because the boxing world would notice this and see it as unfinished work for Caleb.

Plant is now expected to battle Benavidez’s 37-year-old former knockout victim Anthony Dirrell. It was a poor choice of opponents because Dirrell was too difficult. And not the fighter he used to be ten years ago when he was in his prime. Dirrell looked horrific to lose to Benavidez and struggled to beat Avni Yildirim in 2019. Yes, this is the same Yildirim who eliminated Canelo Alvarez in three rounds last year in February 2021. Dirrell had to fight to beat Yildirim showing how stranded he is at 37.

Fans Want To See Plant Face Benavidez

It seems weak on Plant’s part to turn down a fight with Benavidez after talking rubbish on social media, making it seem like he’s interested. This is disappointing news as many boxing fans are eager to see former 168-lb IBF champion Plant take on Benavidez. With Plant losing by 11th round KO to Canelo Alvarez last November. He needed this fight against Benavidez more than the other way around. Benavidez’s only advantage against Plant was taking him down faster than Canelo. Plant gave his reasons for refusing the fight by saying that Benavidez tried to arrange a fight with him.

Although he is already scheduled to face former 160-lb IBF champion David Lemieux on May 21. It’s not clear why Plant was bothered that Benavidez would schedule a fight ahead of his match against Lemieux. After all, the 33-year-old Lemieux is seen as an easy job for Benavidez. In hindsight, Benavidez had to know that Plant would never fight him. Especially now with him coming off an 11th-round knockout loss to Canelo Alvarez.

Plant has never shown any interest in fighting Benavidez in the past. So why would he want to fight him now after losing to Canelo? Lemieux has faced very weak opposition since his 12th-round loss to a unanimous decision to Billy Joe Saunders in 2017. It seems like a weak reason on Plant’s part to turn down a fight with Benavidez simply because he is slated to play 33-year-old Lemieux on 21 May.
