In the latest Ekingsnews golf news, the USGA has announced that the US Women’s Open prize money will almost double this year to $10 million. The increase is from $5.5 million in 2021. This is the highest amount for a women’s golf event.
The move comes after the health care system ProMedica agreed to a long-term sponsorship deal with the USGA. The sponsorship focuses on this tournament. This figure overshadows the previous prize benchmark the AIG British Women’s Open set. They offered a prize pool of $5.8 million in 2021 and are expected to offer an additional $1 million this year.
“For more than 75 years, the US Women’s Open has been a competition every little girl in every country around the world has dreamed of winning,” USGA CEO Mike Van said in a statement. “While I am incredibly proud of what we announced today, I know that this is just the beginning.”
Prize money increase
The USGA also said it plans to increase the prize money to $11 million and $12 million over the next five years with the US Women’s Open. This is the oldest of five women’s golf events. This year’s event kicks off on June 2 at Pine Needles in North Carolina. Here the winner will take home $1.8 million, with Yuka Saso being the reigning champion.
Mike Van told Golf Today that the change is related to the sport’s future growth. “The most important thing is the next generation and the next generation,” Van told Golf Today. “As I said in my meeting with Julie Ingster, Mega Gann, and Daniel Dang today, the real benefit. of this announcement to my daughter and your granddaughter for their dreams to be greater.”
Many famous golfers cheered on this news. “Would love to see it,” said Jessica Korda, six-time LPGA Tour champion. Tweeted in response to the announcement, as her sister and world number one Nelly Korda wrote on Twitter, “LFG!”
