A mix of new talent and experience paid off in their first test of the week. As the Italians started by sweeping (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) Germany to secure their fourth win in five games in this year’s edition of the tournament.

“It was important to start the week with a win, especially after such a long journey,” said Italy captain and setter Simone Gianelli. “I’m happy we managed to play well, but we can do better. And that is what we will focus on for the next game. Germany is a very good team, and they are playing very well. Every time we play them, it’s a tough game.” Apart from outside strikers, Alessandro Michieletto, Daniele Lavia, and central midfielder Simone Anzani are in the starting lineup. Yuri Romano carried the team’s offensive load against Germany. The 24-year-old, left-handed opposing player amassed the team’s highest 13 points, with ten kills, one block, and two aces.

One of Romano’s key plays in that match was against the German block to score Italy’s first point in the first set. A few games later, he hit a quick set behind Gianelli to score 11-6.
